The Timely Conversation Box, 2025

acrylic, rolodex, poker chips, and domestic ephemera

Named after Beatriz Cortez’s Untimely Conversation Box it gambles on you being ready to speak, to critique, and to take a chance on a question. While hers attempts to speak to others through an atemporal and trans-spatial lens, mine demands that you are ready to engage now.

Official Press Release:

"The Tick, The Tell, The [ ]" serves as the latest installment of Canon, the annual publication crafted by graduate students in Visual and Critical Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

The publication is a compendium of marginalia––dealing with the frame around the picture, déjà vu, the director’s commentary, the squeaky wheel, the Shroud of Turin, a pregnant pause, an incorrect caption, matryoshka dolls and dead pixels, too many tabs open, tilting the pinball machine, what goes unsaid and what goes without saying, divine revelation in MLA format, déjà vu, a tossed in towel, and the carried remainder. The reception will feature refreshments and light bites.
